Brokeback Mountain (2/5)

There has been a lot of hype and controversy over Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain. After sitting down for over two hours to watch this and the movie ends my first reaction was, “That’s it?” If this movie were about another taboo (in the movie) couple, like an interacial couple or a Romeo & Juliet, this movie would not have had as much buzz and would have been OK at best. It’s basically a story about two people who can only be together outside of the world they live in. Although the scenery is stricking and Ang Lee can direct well both Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger deliver medeocer performances at best. Michelle Williams, the woman who plays Ledger’s wife had the best performance of the entire movie as a woman struggling with the fact that her husband never told her what she knew, that he was gay. I think “Crash”, the movie that beat out this for the Academy Award for Best Picture was a better film. If these two movies were the best that Hollywood had to offer the whole year it doesn’t surprise me that the film industry had a bad year last year. If you want to see a much better movie with Jake Gyllenhall I would suggest you see “Donnie Darko”.
