Transformers: The Movie (4/5)
With the news of the release of the live-action (non-cartoon) release of a new Transformers Film I figured it was time to review the cartoon version of the movie that caught this franchise at it’s peak. First let’s put this movie into perspective:
In 1986 the move to make a theatrical release of a toy line was brilliant. This was basically a 90 minute commercial for Hasbro. For kids (like me) who owned their fair share of the toys and watched the series every day after school this was Mecca. This movie was the major turning point of stories for the toy line and the cartoon. It introduced new characters and saw some old characters die (something the cartoon series never did). Add those plot twists along with voice-overs by Judd Nelson, Robert Stack, Leonard Nimoy, and Orson Welles you have a winner. I have read some other reviews of this movie where people give this movie one to two stars mentioning how the plot was boring or it was too violent…it’s a cartoon! The target audience of this film is 8-13 year old boys who, at the time, were also watching Three Stooges, GI Joe, and other forgotten television series. If your into this movie I would recommend GI Joe: The Movie and other classic anime series like Robotech. This movie was perfect for it’s time and holds true even now.
